Our October meeting featured a presentation by Michael Bailey of the Brazoria County Museum, and Les Pettigrew of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. They gave us a presentation of the fortifications along the Texas coast during the Civil War. Photos are at the link below.

PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS
We have been busy with our membership drive. We sent out letters to all of our 2012-2013
members encouraging them to join us again and help preserve Alvin’s History for the future. A
letter also went out to all Alvin-Manvel Chamber of Commerce members inviting them to support
the Museum Society. And, if that is not enough, two of our members are making the rounds to area
organizations presenting programs highlighting the roll of the AMS in our community. If you have
not joined for the year, please consider doing so. Check the new memberships listed in this
newsletter and in the 2013 June newsletter to see if your dues are paid.
The Civil War permanent exhibit is installed with just a few things yet to complete. We hope to
have it ready in time for our October 27 meeting. The Karankawa exhibit has had some additions as
well. Come by to see your Museum volunteers at work.
At our Annual June General Membership Meeting, we had a “Mystery Item.” Lois Horner
guessed that the item was a corn husker and received a Christmas ornament as a prize. She
remembered using a husker like that one when she was a child. Congratulations, Lois!
See you on Sunday, October 27.
