New Temporary Exhibit Opens


"Ancient Oil Lamps from the Middle East," the new temporary exhibit, opens at the Alvin Historical Museum on Thursday, December 3. On display are oil lamps from the private collection of Richard and Linda Klapper. Make plans now to view this exquisite exhibit of oil lamps dating between 2000 BC and 1000 AD.

Annual Membership Meeting


The annual General Membership Meeting of the Alvin Museum Society will be Sunday, June 28, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alvin Senior Center, 309 W. Sealy. Meet your new Board Members and Officers. Noel Hankamer will tell us about his collection of old tools which are on display at the museum.

Please make plans to join us and help celebrate Cleo Congrady's years of service as President of the Alvin Museum Society. There will be a reception in her honor after the meeting.

March Membership Meeting


A general membership meeting for the Alvin Museum Society is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 22 in the west wing of the Alvin Senior Center, 309 West Sealy. The public is invited to attend.

Michael Bailey, curator of the Brazoira County Historical Museum, will discuss the origin and later stages of the Texas Navy. Mr. Bailey is very knowledgeable about this topic and will share some interesting information with us.

In addition, there will be a free drawing, discussion of the Garden Tour, sale of raffle tickets for an original watercolor, refreshments and visiting. Make plans to join us for a good time on Sunday, March 22. Look forward to seeing you!!

Garden Tour Tickets


Advance ticket purchase is now available for the 10th Annual Alvin Area Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 18, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 in advance and may be bought from the Alvin-Manvel Chamber of Commerce, at drive-thru windows of Alvin's Guaranty Bank, and during open hours at Alvin Historical Museum and Marguerite Rogers House Museum.

Get your tickets early! Tickets will be available on event day at each featured site for $6.00. Proceeds from the tour including the plant sale will fund maintenance of the House Museum. there is no charge for children under 12 years old.

10th Annual Garden Tour


The Alvin Museum Society and Alvin Garden Club are making plans for their 10th Annual Alvin Area Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 18, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. One of the featured sites will be the buildings and grounds of the Marguerite Rogers House Museum which will also be the location for the ever-popular plant sale. Locations for the other private gardens will be announced in early March.

Make plans now to spend the day visiting these lovely gardens. Look for more information about sites and ticket purchases on the blogspot and local newspapers.

Membership Passes Bylaws


At the May membership meeting of the Alvin Museum Society, the membership voted to accept the new, proposed Bylaws. Many thanks to the bylaws committe for their hard work in rewriting the bylaws and for the unanimous vote of the membership in support of the bylaws. The Board of Directors are working on implementing the new procedures and are asking for assistance and input from all members. As always volunteers are needed to carry on the programs of the Alvin Museum Society. Please contact Board members with your suggestions and comments.

Vote on Proposed Bylaws


The Alvin Museum Society Annual Membership Meeting is set for Sunday, August 24, 2008, at the Alvin Senior Center. Business meeting begins at 2:00 p.m. with annual reports and first quarter reports. After refreshments, the Bylaws Revision Committee will give a presentation and lead a discussion of the proposed revisions to the Bylaws. The AMS Board voted unamimously to recommend the membership's adoption of the proposed document. This is a very important meeting and your support and vote of the bylaws is needed. If you would like to review a copy of the proposed bylaws you can access them from the AMS website (www.alvinmuseum.org). Please make an effort to attend and learn more about the activities of the Alvin Museum Society.
