"Historic Texas Flags"

The Alvin Museum Society's Fall Membership Meeting will be Sunday, October 23, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at the Alvin Senior Center, 309 W. Sealy. Mr. Tom Green of Pearland will present a program on "Historic Flags of Texas." Mr. Green is active in both the Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is a member of the American Legion and the North American Vexillogical Association and has collected or made over 60 historic flags. You will have a chance to ask questions and view the flags he has on display.

There will be refreshments and announcements. We look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday, October 23!!

General Membership Meeting

Alvin Museum Society general membership meeting is set for Sunday, October 24, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alvin Senior Ceter west wing. The program will be presented by Mr. Harold Gaul, current president of the Texas Historical Cemetery Guardianship Association. This is a group of people dedicated to locating, recording, and preserving all the cemeteries in Brazoria County. They have put together a database of over 34,000 names of those who are buried in 163 cemeteries in this county.

Please join us for this very intersting program There will be refreshments and announcements, but no business meeting.

New Exhibit at Historical Museum

The "Shells" exhibit at the historical museum and the "Dolls on Parade" display at Marguerite Rogers House Museum have both closed. The exhibits were well attended and popular with visitors.

A new, temporary exhibit, "Honor - Glory - Discipline," has opened at the historical museum. This is a photographic documentary of Alvin High School's 2009 football team by Barbara Lewis plus memorabilia from past football seasons.

The Alvin Museum Society annouces the opening of two new, temporary exhibits. They are "Shells: Treasures from the Sea," at the Alvin Historical Museum and "Dolls on Parade" at the Marguerite Rogers House Museum. Both museums are open from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and the first Saturday of each month.

The Alvin Museum Society General Membership meeting is set for Sunday, February 28, 2010, 2:00 p.m. at the Alvin Senior Center. Richard and Linda Klapper will tell about their extensive collection of Ancient Oil Lamps. After the program and reception, visitors will have an opportunity to view the temporary exhibit at the museum. This exhibit closes on February 28.

New Temporary Exhibit Opens

"Ancient Oil Lamps from the Middle East," the new temporary exhibit, opens at the Alvin Historical Museum on Thursday, December 3. On display are oil lamps from the private collection of Richard and Linda Klapper. Make plans now to view this exquisite exhibit of oil lamps dating between 2000 BC and 1000 AD.

The annual General Membership Meeting of the Alvin Museum Society will be Sunday, June 28, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alvin Senior Center, 309 W. Sealy. Meet your new Board Members and Officers. Noel Hankamer will tell us about his collection of old tools which are on display at the museum.

Please make plans to join us and help celebrate Cleo Congrady's years of service as President of the Alvin Museum Society. There will be a reception in her honor after the meeting.

March Membership Meeting

A general membership meeting for the Alvin Museum Society is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 22 in the west wing of the Alvin Senior Center, 309 West Sealy. The public is invited to attend.

Michael Bailey, curator of the Brazoira County Historical Museum, will discuss the origin and later stages of the Texas Navy. Mr. Bailey is very knowledgeable about this topic and will share some interesting information with us.

In addition, there will be a free drawing, discussion of the Garden Tour, sale of raffle tickets for an original watercolor, refreshments and visiting. Make plans to join us for a good time on Sunday, March 22. Look forward to seeing you!!

Advance ticket purchase is now available for the 10th Annual Alvin Area Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 18, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 in advance and may be bought from the Alvin-Manvel Chamber of Commerce, at drive-thru windows of Alvin's Guaranty Bank, and during open hours at Alvin Historical Museum and Marguerite Rogers House Museum.

Get your tickets early! Tickets will be available on event day at each featured site for $6.00. Proceeds from the tour including the plant sale will fund maintenance of the House Museum. there is no charge for children under 12 years old.

10th Annual Garden Tour

The Alvin Museum Society and Alvin Garden Club are making plans for their 10th Annual Alvin Area Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 18, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. One of the featured sites will be the buildings and grounds of the Marguerite Rogers House Museum which will also be the location for the ever-popular plant sale. Locations for the other private gardens will be announced in early March.

Make plans now to spend the day visiting these lovely gardens. Look for more information about sites and ticket purchases on the blogspot and local newspapers.

Membership Passes Bylaws

At the May membership meeting of the Alvin Museum Society, the membership voted to accept the new, proposed Bylaws. Many thanks to the bylaws committe for their hard work in rewriting the bylaws and for the unanimous vote of the membership in support of the bylaws. The Board of Directors are working on implementing the new procedures and are asking for assistance and input from all members. As always volunteers are needed to carry on the programs of the Alvin Museum Society. Please contact Board members with your suggestions and comments.

The Alvin Museum Society Annual Membership Meeting is set for Sunday, August 24, 2008, at the Alvin Senior Center. Business meeting begins at 2:00 p.m. with annual reports and first quarter reports. After refreshments, the Bylaws Revision Committee will give a presentation and lead a discussion of the proposed revisions to the Bylaws. The AMS Board voted unamimously to recommend the membership's adoption of the proposed document. This is a very important meeting and your support and vote of the bylaws is needed. If you would like to review a copy of the proposed bylaws you can access them from the AMS website (www.alvinmuseum.org). Please make an effort to attend and learn more about the activities of the Alvin Museum Society.

Michael Bailey, curator at the Brazoria County Historical Museum, shared his knowledge of many ways to improve the condition and extend the life of collectible fabric items at the Society's May meeting. He gave some very informative information as well as hand out sheets and internet sites. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his presentation.

The Annual Garden Tour was a big success. Outdoor entertaining seemed to be the key to most of the gardens' attractions from cozy gazebos to fully equipped patio kitchens.

The Alvin Museum Society and Alvin Garden Club are finalizing plans for the 9th annual Alvin Area Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 19, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Rain or shine the four featured sites will be open. Tickets are $6.00 and can be purchased from any site the day of the event or $5.00 in advance from Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce and drive-thru windows of Guaranty Bank, both in Alvin. The plant sale will be held at the Marguerite Rogers House Musuem which is part of the tour. Other locations are the gardens of Joe and Jan Schneider, Bill and Cindy Waggoner, and David and Sandra Gates. Proceeds from the tour will fund maintenance of the House Museum.

The quarterly membership meeting of the Alvin Museum Society was held on Sunday, February 25, 2007, at the Alvin Senior Center. After the business meeting and refreshments, Wallace Saage, Curator of Collections at The Heritage Society, showed pictures and discussed restoration projects following Hurricane Rita.

Upcoming activities include the 8th Annual Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 21. Volunteers are needed. Call Pat Klopp for more information. The Spring exhibit at The Cottage House Museum will be teapots.

Bruce Taylor-Hille, Program Coordinator at the Brazoria County Historical Museum, presented the program at the August 27th meeting of the Alvin Museum Society. Bruce described the annual Austin Town celebration in Angleton and gave a detailed account of what life was like in the early 1800's. Austin Town is an open-air event which depicts a living history remembrance of life as it was when Stephen F. Austin mapped out Brazoria County.

"How Did We Do It?"

My Life Story written by Larry Phillips is a chronological telling of the first 67 years of Larry's life. He poses the question "How Did We Do It?" and then narratively proceeds to answer the question. Larry weaves a fascinating, heart-warming story. He provides an historical account, along with an array of photos, of his life in Manvel, Texas.

Quarterly Meeting Report

The Alvin Museum Society met February 26, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alvin Senior Center. After the business session, two presentations were made as well as an opportunity to view the photographic commentary on the 1900 Storm. During refreshments, everyone tried to guess the "surprise artifact". The meeting was well attended and everyone had a good time. Many thanks to the volunteers for the delicious refreshments!

Gary Appelt presented a framed photo of the old Alvin Depot that was found during renovation. Accepting on behalf of The Society is Mona Travis.

Larry and Nancy Phillips are shown giving a copy of Larry's autobiography, My Life Story,to Mona Travis, Vice-President of the Alvin Museum Society.

The mystery artifact, a beehive sprayer, was not such a mystery. There were 11 correct answers. Janie Whitaker's name was drawn as the winner. Presenting Janie a copy of the History of Manvel is Anna Kettler.

There was a good turn out at the dual meeting of the Alvin Museum Society on Sunday, August 28, 2005. We had the annual financial and activities report along with the first quarter report. Upcoming events include another "Another Evening with the Stars" planned for some time in early Spring; a sneak peak at the progress of the historical museum; and the April Garden Tour. Door prize winners were Jerry Pryor and Gay Prevost. The next quarterly meeting is November 20, 2005.

Museum Trip

The Alvin Senior Center is taking a trip to the Galveston County Historical Museum on Thursday, September 22, 2005, to view the "Glorious Voyage" exhibit. They will leave the Senior Center at 9:15 a.m. and eat lunch on the way home. Cost is $3.00 per person plus your meal. Payment deadline is September 15! Contact Alvin Senior Center for reservations.

We are pleased to have Bruce Taylor-Hille, Program Coordinator at the Brazoria County Historical Museum, who will describe the annual Austin Town celebration in Angleton. The Austin Town celebration depicts a living history remembrance of life as it was when Stephen F. Austin mapped out Brazoria County. Bruce will bring replicas of tools used for builing log cabins and will illustrate their use.

Museum Society Quarterly Meeting - May 2005

At the May meeting of the Alvin Museum Society, some of the artifacts to be displayed in the Alvin Historical Museum were shown. A drawing was held for the correct identification of the above artifact, held by Dr. J. C. DeWitt, one of the winners. Anna Kettler, another winner, shows A History of Manvel, Texas. Both received a copy of the book for recognizing the object as a pack saddle, a wooden frame placed on the back of a burro to secure loads.
